The original sculpture of the woman with a water jar was established in 1925 here in the Park of Francisco Cantón, Valladolid, Yucatan, Mexico. It was later taken down, but was replaced in 1958. This one is proudly painted in "los colores del traje regional" (the colors of the regional costume). The poinsettia, being native to Mexico, is seen everywhere there as a Christmas decoration, although the German/English/American fir tree with lights and tinsel is now often seen, as well! Info from: VALLADOLID EN LA NOSTALGIA by Nestor Aguilar Perez and Juan J. Gonzalez H., 2013. (I love the big frogs seated around the edge. The frog is symbolic in Maya lore, too.) www.exploratorium.edu/frogs/folklore/folklore_2.html
