Known as the 'Carpintero' (carpenter) in Spanish, this bird worked hard on that old log to find its lunch ! I am indebted to Eric Gulson (again !) for his scholarly identification of this bird . . . it is in fact a Yucatan sub-species of the Golden-fronted Woodpecker (who knew !?) I must say, you do need to be an expert with these birds . . . but they are delightful to see nonetheless ! Thank you, Eric !
