The pyramid is the tallest structure at the former ancient Mayan city of Muyil, in the Yucatan Peninsula, Mexico. It is known as El Castillo, but is actually believed to be a temple to the Moon as evidenced by various artifacts and inscriptions found within the structure and on its face. The Mayas were very much into both astronomy and astrology and the moon was very important to them. The pyramid is 56 ft. (17 m) tall and like most of the remaining structures still standing at this site the pyramid is around 1000 years old, though artifacts have been found here indicating Mayan settlement on the site since 300 BC. Muyil was actually an inland sea port standing beside a huge lagoon, part of a series of lagoons that stretched to and alongside the Caribbean coast. They constructed canals linking the lagoons and the shoreline 15 miles to the East, and were thus able to carry out trade by means of canoe with coastal Mayan communities and other inland groups.
