We were already in the forest by sunrise and headed down the main trail. After a while though we veered off onto narrow trails often very rocky or with wide tree roots to navigate around. We were looking for monkeys of course. In this section of jungle there are known to be several family groups of spider monkeys but only one family of howlers. We walked all the way to the lagoon, then along its edge for a while then back into the jungle in a wide circle to where we started off without seeing any monkeys. There were some Mayan guys at the entrance to the reserve whose job it is to monitor the monkeys and make sure no destructive activities are allowed to take place within the reserve. They told us where some spider monkeys had last been seen and one came with us to look again. About half an hour later we found a largish family group. They were moving around swiftly high up in the trees, but occasionally stopped to rest and/or check us out, but when they did they were often partially hidden by branches so it was difficult to get photos. I did get a couple of reasonable ones however which I will post tomorrow.
