Stencil Painted Birds (Guillermo S. Quintana) - Merida, Mexico -15

The artist's name is Guillermo S. Quintana from México City and he stenciled as many as 500 "Birds" around Merida in 2014, a number can still be seen in the Historic Centre, east of the Plaza Grande. There were two styles of birds done in Merida, generally differentiated by the large rectangularish "branch" at the birds' feet or not. Some people befriended him and even had some birds painted inside their homes at their request. Other expats, had a hissy-fit, stamping their feet online about "the vandal" and the horribly offensive "defacing" of their properties, vowing to call the police and see him prosecuted to the greatest extent possible. The birds were done in various colors, one color per bird, to contrast with the background wall, one bird per property, and generally in low or high corners, next to an electric meter or other man-made object. (a grill, an architectural element). They were done using a stencil and are about 6-8" high (20 cm). The artist's stated goal was to remind people of nature, to look up at the sky, to think of creatures other than themselves. For a time, some people were spreading the news of spotting the birds and various streets in Centro had more than others. Other expats rushed to paint over the "defacings" as quickly as possible. Such is life.
