Chichen Itza, Yucatan, Mexico

Chichen Itza lies in the State of Yucatan, Mexico, on the Yucatan peninsular. It was one of the largest cities of the Mayan civilisation and was built between 650AD and 1200AD. There is evidence of human population in the area dating back to the last millenium BCE. The surrounding land is mainly jungle, and settlements would have developed around cenotes, natural water holes in an area where there is no surface water.
