Popayán: Iglesia Nuestra Señora Del Carmen

Construction of the Iglesia Nuestra Señora Del Carmen began in 1730, a year after the Carmelites arrived in Popayán. The earthquake of 1736 was a setback as the church had to be rebuilt. It was designed and constructed by the Santa Fe architect Gregorio Causí and sponsored by Doña Dionisia Pérez Manrique, Marquesa de San Miguel de la Vega. This baroque church has a basic rectangular shape but displays some mudéjar elements. The altars feature some splendid retables in a Plateresque style, which were created by local artists. The church served as sanctuary for the Carmelite convent until the Carmelites were expelled and the convent was dissolved in 1863. It serves as a parish church today.
