The Torre del Reloj (Clock Tower) was built between 1673 and 1682 and today is Popayán's most iconic structure. The clock, made in England, was installed in 1737. Its mechanism was operated by the action of two lead weights that were melted down to make bullets during the war of independence in 1814. After the earthquake of 1983, the clock was repaired and put back in service by the same English company that had originally made it.
