The Catedral Basílica de Nuestra Señora de la Asunción is the third cathedral at this location; it was constructed in a neoclassical style between 1819 and 1906. Construction was interrupted several times because of political unrest, financial problems, and natural disasters. It was restored after it was damaged in the earthquake of 1983.
