Uxmal is an ancient Mayan city of the classical period in the Yucatan Peninsula of Mexico. The structures at Uxmal date from about 850 to 1100 AD. It had a possible population of about 15,000 people. The Pyramid of the Magician (also the Adivino or the Pyramid of the Dwarf) is a stepped pyramid. It is unusual among Mayan pyramids because it is oval or elliptical in shape, instead of the more common rectilinear plan. Many pyramids were built on top of earlier pyramids. This pyramid is unusual in that the earlier pyramid is exposed on the eastern side. This photo shows the earlier pyramid. We visited Uxmal on a shore excursion from Progreso, Mexico, in February 2014.
