Uxmal is an ancient Mayan city of the classical period in the Yucatan Peninsula of Mexico. The structures at Uxmal date from about 850 to 1100 AD. It is the most heavily decorated Mayan ruins in the Yucatan. It had a possible population of about 15,000 people. This is the Quadrangle of the Nuns which was built in the years of 900- 910 AD during the Post Classic Period. The origin of the structure’s name comes from the group of maidens that originally inhabited the Quadrangle. The decoration of the Quadrangle is exuberant. The decorations include a lattice design and serpents. We visited Uxmal on a shore excursion from Progreso, Mexico, in February 2014.
