Chichén Itzá is one of the 7 New Wonders of The World. Chichén Itzá was a major city during the Classic Period of the Maya culture living on the Yucatan Peninsula in Mexico. The large centre pyramid, El Castillo or the Temple of Kukulkan dominates Chichén Itzá. The Toltec culture that overthrew the Maya culture probably built the temple atop of a Maya temple which stood there. Temple-over-temple-building style was common those days and remains can be found inside Chichén Itzá. The Toltec king Topiltzin Ce Acatl Quetzalcoatl arrived around 987 here and scared the original inhabitants. This is why the site is a mix of Maya and Toltec cultures. Somewehere between 1000 and 1200 the Toltec culture was chased by another Maya king, Hunac Ceel, ruler of Mayapan. Nowadays, the site is an UNESCO World Heritage Site and is open for public. The temples itself are closed, but the site can be freely walked. Also the largest ball court of Mesoamerica can be found here.
