We visited the Dzibilchaltún Mayan ruins on a shore excursion from the Mexican port of Progreso. The ruins are about 10 miles north of Merida. The Open Chapel (Capilla Abierta) was built between 1590 and 1600 in the central square. The chapel indicates that, around 1600, there was still a large population living in Dzibilchaltún. The main part remaining is the apse. The nave, the majority of the chapel, was made of branches and straw and extended out from the stone apse. The rear of the chapel.
