Chichen Itza was one of the largest Maya cities and it was likely to have been one of the mythical great cities, or Tollans, referred to in later Mesoamerican literature. The city may have had the most diverse population in the Maya world, a factor that could have contributed to the variety of architectural styles at the site. The Temple of Kukulkan is the large pyramid that dominates the Chichen Itza Archaeological Zone. It is also known as “El Castillo” or “The Castle”. All 4 sides of the pyramid have 91 steps plus the top platform (the final “step”) adds up to 365—the number of days in the year. It is 79 feet (24 meters) tall and is very well-preserved.
