View from Palacio de Gobierno Catedral de San Ildefonso de Yucatán was built between 1561 and 1598, making it the first cathedral to be finished on the mainland of the Americas. Construction, started under Don Pedro de Aulestia and completed under Juan Miguel de Agüero, used some of the stone from the Mayan temple that sat on this site from the settlement of Ichcansiho (T'ho for short) using Mayan slave labor. The seat of the archdiocese of Yucatán, it is dedicated to Saint Ildefonso, an Archbishop of Toledo from 657 to 667.
