Unlike other examples of mural painting in the Maya area, the protagonists of these scenes from La Pirámide del Grupo Chuk Nahb (Pyamid of the Chuk Naha Group) seem to come from different social classes and to perform everyday activities related to food preparation and consumption and to the transport of merchandise, prior to a celebration in Calakmul. The treatment of the figures and the naturalism to render the individuals suggest the participation and skill of several artists, who incorporated blocks of glyphs to identify the main participants: the people with the stole or corn-based drink (aj ul) and salt (aj atz-aam) on the lower panels, and the figure with tobacco (aj may) on the middle wall. Gran Museo del Mundo Maya (Mayan World Museum of Mérida) opened in 2021. The contemporary building, designed by by Grupo 4A Arquitectos, is in the form a ceiba, a sacred tree believed by the Maya to connect the living with the underworld and heavens above. The museum's permanent galleries house a collection of more than 1100 remarkably well-preserved ancient Mayan artifacts.
