This carved limestone sculpture of a seated man wearing a Chaac headress was recovered from Chichén Itzá, circa 900-1200 d.C. Palacio Cantón, at Paseo de Montejo and Calle 43, was built in 1911 as a residence for General Francisco Canton, the governor of the state of Yucatán. It stayed in the family for a few years before being sold to the government where it functioned as a school, and then the official residence of the state governors before El Instituto Nacional de Antropología e Historia (INAH) turned it into Museo de Antropología e Historia in 1966. Designed by Italian architect Enrico Deserti and engineer Manuel Canton Ramos, who oversaw Casas Gemelas, the mansion turned-museum is a mix of architectural styles: French Baroque, European neoclassical, and classical.
