Archeological site of the ancient Mayan city of Cobá. Riviera Maya at Quintana Roo State, Mexico. Trip 2023

Arriving a the third Group -Nohoc Mul- where another Ball court with stelae, temples, castles, houses, etc. The most important feature in this place its the pyramid of the same name. At 42 meters tall (137 feet) Nohoch Mul, which means in maya "great mound" could also be translated as "the great pyramid" or simply "the big one". Is the tallest Mayan pyramid on the Yucatan Peninsula and the second tallest Mayan pyramid in the world, it also took about 365 years to get that height. It is located at the archaeological site of Cobá in Mexican state Quintana Roo. Mayan were crazy about math. We are talking about the culture (along with preceding Olmecs) who actually had a written representation for the number zero. Anyhow... Nohoch Mul tas 7 terraces. Each terrace represents a cycle of 52 years in the Mayan calendar. At the end of a cycle, Mayan builders would cover the older pyramid with a new one. Hence, this pyramid with its seven terraces took about 365 years to reach its present height.
