Sculpture of the ruler, limestone, Hopelchén, 600-800 AD, Museo Arqueológico Fuerte de San Miguel

The sculpture represents a ruler dressed as a warrior; highlights his headdress showing a supernatural being known as the War Serpent, or Waxaklahun-Ubah-Kan, who was a symbol frequently used to show the real power of a person, since not anyone had the right to wear it. The Serpent of War first appeared in Teotihuacan, and from there it spread to the Maya area to reinforce the message of power and war that the Mayan divine lords wanted to transmit, at the same time they invoked the protection of that deity. It was depicted with the head of a reptile with an elongated snout, fangs and sometimes, Tloloc-style blinkers.
