During the Maya Classic period, when the ruler died, he was placed in his grave, as part of the grave goods that would accompany and protect him during his long trip to the underworld, a jade mask that was believed to represent hin alive. This mask, found in tomb of Structure VII of Calakmul, shows the ruler's deified face with earplugs that represent the four-sided Mesoamerican cosmological model and a center. The scroll elements of the nose ring and those that come out of his mouth are clear allusion to the divine breath and to the life of the mask through its breathing.
