These anthropomorphic sculptures known as Atlantean figures based on their resemblance of those from Tula, served to support benches in temples in Chichen Itza and it is believed they represent bacabs or pauahtuns, deities who hold up the skies. They display Maya iconographic elements with stylistic influence from Central Mexico, as well as variation in costume and ornamentatation.
