Yucatan-0005, Factory ruins, Aké, February 2024

Rough scans of collodion dry plates taken at the Yucatan workshop held by Scully and Osterman. These kinds of plates have very high resolution and a lot of Dmax, so are a bit tough to scan properly. When printed with a process they were intended to be used with (e.g., salted paper printing) a lot of the artifacts (e.g., fibers that landed in the varnish while it was drying) will not show up. They will, however show up here. This sisal rope factory, although mostly in ruins, was still functioning, and the fiber was still being processed in the shell of the building. This shot attempted to peek into the interior a bit, capturing the remnants of the arched façade. There was a fair bit of greenery around and the very strong sunlight created a lot of contrast. This was my first plate on the first day of shooting, and we were guessing a bit at the exposure -- Mark had done a test plate a couple days previously in similar light, but the processing was slightly different. It worked well enough here, though.
