They stick stones in the stucco to decorate the buildings in this part of the Yucatan but this wonderful abstract was an extreme example. This whole city is a treasure. I came to realize that these stones are not random, but came about as part of the process of cutting the ancient Mayan temple stones. These are the innumerable chips that came from the ancient carving process. Town centers like Merida and Valladolid, but also smaller places like Izamal, must have been and probably still are treasure troves of artifacts of Mayan builders. Post-hispanic builders up through contemporary times have made use of some of the treasures, like these myriad stone chips, to ornament, enliven, and personalize urban structures.
