Named by the Spanish who discovered it, El Mercado (the Market) in Chichén Itzá was a large colonnaded building with a spacious interior court. The precise function of the building is still not known, but three hearths and grinding stones have been found in the structure, which scholars normally interpret as evidence of domestic activities. However, due to its complete lack of privacy and large, steep stairway leading to the interior, its is more likely that the building served ceremonial or council house functions.
