Cancun: The Great Ball Court (#13)

Spanning 166 by 68 meters and with walls 12 meters high, the Great Ball Court at Chichén Itzá is by far the largest ball court in all of ancient Mesoamerica. The large Temple of the Jaguar sits atop the east wall and was used for ceremonial occasions. The base of the walls are slightly curved and are engraved with a mural of ball players, some decapitated with streams of blood that turn into serpents. Most of the rules of the game are not known, but it is believed to be similar to today's racquetball or volleyball, with the objective of simply keeping the ball in play. The hoops on the walls are late editions and changed the rules completely, with points being scored for hitting the hoop and instant wins for going through the hole. Because of the height of the hoops at the Great Ball Court in Chichén Itzá, the game is not believed to have been played solely by hitting the ball with one's hips; more likely, arms, rackets, or bats were used. The ball game did have important ritual aspects, and often human sacrifice concluded a match. Whether the winner or loser was sacrificed is still unknown, but the murals around the base of the walls seems to show the victors were the real losers.
