These rocks are huge. They have persisted for centuries in this state in an apparently long-lasting balance. How they were prepared, brought here, erected, and stabilized is a mystery. The Mayans had no metal tools, no wheels, and no pack animals. Yet these pillars have lasted centuries longer than the adjacent hacienda. All over the Yucatan you still see small rocks like these stuck between larger ones. It occurred to me while I was carving my own pillars from nearly dry clay that the smaller rocks are pieces from the carving process.
