Earlier this year whilst in Mexico I was lucky enough to visit the island called Isla Contoy, just off the Yucatan Peninsula. This island is a nature reserve mainly for birds. Most of the island is out of bounds, but few people daily are allowed to visit the island. I was astonished when I found that the island was a breeding ground for the Magnificent Frigate Bird, amongst others. These fantastic birds were all around the lagoon area and you could get reasonably close to some of them. The male Magnificent Frigate Bird is reknown for its red pouch which inflates during the breeding season to attract a female. I was incredibly lucky to catch this superb bird with its 'red balloon' pouch on show. These very large sea birds are so aptly named because to me they are truely 'Magnificent'.
