Una Calesa

A one-horse spring carriage that seats four persons. They are a unique feature of Mérida city. This one awaits a fare in front of Parque de la Maternidad, adjacent to the Church of the Third Order on a quiet Sunday. The temporary risers have been erected in connection with Carnival celebration. The following is lifted from the "YucatanToday" website: "Calesa rides are best taken at night or on Sunday morning when traffic is light in Mérida. That is when the wonderful clip-clop sound of the horse's hooves and her slow pace can best be appreciated, in a marked contrast to the faster pace of cars and buses. Sit back and relax, look around you at the colonial buildings, and you can easily begin to imagine what Mérida was like one hundred years ago. The traditional trip costs 250 pesos and the double time, 500 pesos. And don't forget a tip for the horse!"
