At this incompletely excavated site, 15 km. south of Tulum, visitors (and there are few) are able to wander along well-defined trails that wind through the forest which has overgrown deteriorated dwellings, yet to be examined. Archeological explorations began in 1987. Artifacts here date from 350 B.C.E. to 1500 C.E. The site stands 12 km. from the Caribbean Sea, which was accessible via a series of dug canals, lagoons, and a creek. The architectural style here is described as that of the Peten due to similarities in construction to the temples of Tikal in Guatemala (which we were privileged to visit twice in the 1990s).
