From the top one can admire an expanse of thick forest and several shallow lakes. At 138 feet in height, this is the tallest Mayan structure in the Yucatan. Coba once encompassed an area of 30 square miles. Approximately 6,500 structures have been documented, although only a fraction have been freed from the forest which long ago claimed them. Mounds visible from the tree-canopied limestone trails winding through the site are actually stone platforms where thatch-roofed structures once stood. Most dated hieroglyphic inscriptions here are from the 7th century A.D. The area is thought to have been first settled between 100 B.C. - 100 A.D.
