Long Gallery, "Hipiles de Yucatan"

Showing a bit more of the same room (see previous frame). This is the largest room of perhaps ten that carry the visitor through the history and geography of this marvelous textile art form that is so little known outside the area. See captions in adjacent frames for the background on the exhibit subject. The textiles of Mesoamerica are generally known to the world through the beautiful and complex handweaving done by dwellers of the highlands of Chiapas (Mex.) and Guatemala. Little world attention has been given to this tropical lowland style of the Yucatan peninsula which, instead of focusing on weaving patterns, stresses embroidery for decorative effect. To my notice, there is not even a good book about it suited for the tourist. One has to be able to read Spanish, and even then one is hard-pressed to find a book for sale about it. This exhibit, therefore, was a big, and delightful, surprise for me, as I've been interested in the "bordado" art form ever since I first visited the area in the middle 1980s. (The exhibit labels were entirely in Spanish [with a bit of Maya for stitch/style names], which luckily I read fairly well, except for specialized words, of which there were quite a few.) More to come.
