Hipiles on exhibit at Palacio Canton, Merida, Yucatan, through April. Part of a series/set. See adjacent frames or SET, "Mestiza". The traditional women's dress of the Yucatan peninsula since before the arrival of the Spanish conquistadors. Almost always, the single garment is worn with an under-petticoat that lengthens the ensemble and provides a lacy finish to the bottom, as seen here on the right. When worn out of doors, the hipil is also 'completed' by the addition of a silk or (today) rayon fringed stole, or rebozo.
